The Western Allegheny Health System remains at the forefront of important developments in advanced gynecologic cancer care. Our commitment is evident through our multidisciplinary approach that includes in-depth consultation; medical therapy; inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy; immunotherapy; complete radiation oncology therapy; cancer prevention and education; social service; and hospice and palliative care for adolescents and adults. Most diagnostic work, including biopsies, can be performed on an outpatient basis.
A variety of leading-edge minimally invasive, laser, reconstructive, and complex surgical procedures have proven to be essential in the management of gynecologic malignancies, especially cervical and ovarian cancer.
Many of these unique procedures, including radical pelvic surgery and treatment protocols, were designed and developed by West Penn Hospital's nationally and internationally recognized board certified gynecologic oncologists. In addition, important educational, prevention and screening programs for cervical cancer are offered, using serology testing for human papillomavirus, as well as identification and management of ovarian and familial cancer.
With the recent acquisition of the da Vinci® robotic surgery system, our patients are able to benefit from minimally invasive surgical options for both benign and malignant gynecologic conditions.
In addition, important educational, prevention and screening programs for cervical cancer are offered.
The Western Pennsylvania Hospital offers women who have gynecologic cancers experimental drug therapies and the opportunity to participate in a variety of cutting-edge clinical trials through the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) – a service of the National Cancer Institute.
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is comprised of physicians with specialized training in gynecologic surgical oncology. Each of our board certified physicians has completed a full residency in obstetrics and gynecology, followed by extensive training in the care of women with cancer during a fellowship in gynecologic oncology. Our physicians work as a team to ensure that patients receive care that is delivered in a coordinated manner.
Above all, the goal of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology is to provide women with "total care." From diagnosis, to treatment therapies, to follow-up care, and even end-of-life care, our physicians are dedicated to offering patients the most compassionate, quality care available.
