A key component of the program is a dedicated hemostasis and thrombosis laboratory which serves as a regional reference center for hospitals throughout the tri-state area.

Our expert staff, state-of-the-art technology, and extensive diagnostic testing capabilities aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of disorders of thrombosis and hemostasis including:

Disorders of Hemostasis
Thrombotic Clotting Disorders
  • Hemostasis problems in pregnancy
  • Hereditary and acquired thrombocytopathies
  • Von Willebrand's disease
  • Factor deficiencies

  • Recurrent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolus (PE)
  • Complex thrombophilias with family testing
  • Pre-surgical risk assessment of patients with thrombosis and hemostasis problems
  • Hereditary and acquired thrombotic disorders

In addition, The Anticoagulation Management Center at West Penn Hospital offers point-of-care testing for patients who require long-term or temporary anticoagulation (blood thinning).

The laboratory provides testing for non-malignant hematological disorders including complex anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, myeloproliferative disorders, and immune-related anemia/thrombocytopenia.

All requests ordered as diagnostic panels are reported with a physician’s interpretation. Physicians are also available for discussion of laboratory results and consultation for aid in the management of disorders of hemostasis and thrombosis.

The Hemostasis and Thrombosis Laboratory is accredited by the
College of American Pathologists and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-certified by the United States Food and Drug Administration and performs more than 3,000 tests each month.

The lab’s medical directors are board certified in hematology and have extensive expertise in specialized hematology and coagulation studies. Both physicians are heavily involved in resident and staff training, see patients who exhibit coagulation disorders and are available for consultations.

The lab is open Monday - Tuesday - Friday from 8am-12pm

Wednesday and Thursday from 12pm-4pm
