The WPAHS has expertise in six major technical areas:

The West Penn Allegheny Health System was second in the world to use Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) which has resulted in a giant leap forward in curative radiation cancer treatment. It is a sophisticated technology that can deliver a lethal dose of radiation to a tumor while sparing surrounding healthy normal tissue, nerves, spinal cord and organs.

All these devices are guided by an ultra-high speed computer which plots radiation beam paths to precisely conform to the exact shape and location of the tumor. The result is a dramatic increase in dosage delivery to the diseased tissue with minimized effect on surrounding healthy tissue, as well as shorter treatment times.
With the significant advancements in computer hardware and software radiation therapy treatment, planning and delivery have changed dramatically and will continue to progress during the next decade.
