Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Care And Services at WPAHS
As a designated a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers, Allegheny General Hospital offers comprehensive cancer care programs for a number of complex and rare sub-types of cancer, including sarcomas which are a rare type of malignant tumor that can be divided into two groups:
- Bone
- Soft tissue
Soft tissue sarcomas are cancerous tumors that form in the soft tissues that surround, connect or support the structures and organs of the body.For example, in the muscles, tendons, fat, blood vessels, nerves and synovial (joint) tissues.Soft tissue sarcoma is a rare type of cancer, but there are more than 50 kinds.
The WPAHS experts in soft-tissue sarcoma include specialists in diagnostic radiology, medical oncology, pathology, radiation oncology, rehabilitation support, and surgery.
Treatment approaches for this disease include conservative operations, combined with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy, which offer patients a high rate of tumor control while avoiding amputation.
